Why Gochang’s Cherry Blossom Challenge is the Future of Interactive Tourism in 2026

Geochang County’s Travel Snap Challenge, launched for the spring cherry blossom season, caught fire on social media and gave the county a major tourism boost.
The county said it ran an interactive SNS campaign from April 4 to 26 at local cherry blossom spots. Visitors created and shared a flood of photos and videos, producing results that exceeded expectations.

The challenge invited tourists to make and share their own content, turning simple visits into organic promotion and drawing attention as a participatory tourism model.
Well-known sites such as Imbul Village in Namsang-myeon, Byeonggok Village in Buksang-myeon, and Yongwonjeong in Mari-myeon got great exposure. At the same time, spots like Ungyang-myeon’s Ten-ri cherry blossom path and Hagaemyeong Village in Goje-myeon also gained visibility, reestablishing Geochang as a go-to destination for cherry-blossom photos. The campaign helped disperse visitor traffic that had previously been concentrated in a few places.
The county rewarded every participant with a character keychain and a Geochang “Year of Visits” value-travel coupon book, and handed a Golden Apple Package to the five posts with the highest views to encourage participation. The content created will be used in future tourism promotion.
Ok Jin-sook, head of the Tourism Promotion Division, said the project proved a small team can drive strong content production and sharing. She added that officials will expand seasonal, interactive content to accelerate Geochang’s shift into a longer-stay destination.
Meanwhile, Geochang County plans to build on this success to strengthen its reputation as a cherry-blossom sanctuary and to continue follow-up marketing aimed at attracting visitors year-round.
