The 9th Ha-jeon Clam Five-Senses Experience Festival took place around Ha-jeon Fishing Village in Simwon-myeon, Gochang County, North Jeolla Province. It ran from the 1st to the 3rd and wrapped up after three lively days.
Organizers focused on hands-on programs that showcased Gochang’s tidal flats—famous for clams—and aimed squarely at attracting families.
A standout was the Mudflat Parade, where visitors rode tractors out onto the flats for performances and interactive fun. Activities like clam digging and eel-catching gave the event the feel of a true stay-and-play getaway.
Environmental education was woven into the lineup as well. The “Blue Carbon Kids Experience” taught children about the mudflats’ carbon-absorbing role through seagrass planting and sand-art projects.
To bring in all generations, organizers offered events for local seniors, quiz contests, and a video-content competition—broadening the festival’s audience.
Local specialties—clams, eel and gim (Korean seaweed)—sold out quickly, and nearby businesses appeared to enjoy a noticeable sales boost.
Kim Young-sik, acting county head of Gochang, thanked the residents and officials who helped organize the event and said the county will build on the tidal flats’ strengths to expand their use as an ecotourism resource.
