Yanggu — By Lee Seong-hyun
Yanggu County in Gangwon Province is rolling out its signature spring celebration, the 2026 Youth Yanggu Gomchwi Festival, running May 2–5 at Yanggu Sports Park. Now in its 23rd year, the festival embraces the slogan ‘Royal Gomchwi’ and has lined up programs that celebrate gomchwi — the crowned king of spring greens — with something for every visitor.
Families and kids are a major focus this year, with hands-on attractions galore. The Catch! Tinyping pop-up playground creates a kids’ zone that blends arcade games, interactive activities and DIY stations. The Kids Adventure Zone keeps the fun going all day with a traveling petting zoo, bounce areas and gomchwi kit workshops that let children get creative.
Festival highlights include the Mini Force Sing-along Show on May 2. On Children’s Day, May 5, the Catch! Tinyping Sing-along returns alongside a family song festival called Gomirang: Play, Sing, Enjoy! — all designed to deliver unforgettable moments for visiting families.
Food-focused experiences put Yanggu’s signature gomchwi front and center. Visitors can try hands-on workshops to make gomchwi pesto pizza and gomchwi ice cream, join a traditional rice-cake pounding (tteok-mechigi) session and sample gomchwi wraps at tasting booths. Premium gomchwi makgeolli will be available for purchase, offering a local twist for adventurous palates.
Nights at the festival come alive with performances. The opening night features an MBC Radio live broadcast with appearances by Choi Su-ho and Kim Da-bi. On May 3, the Youth Yanggu Concert spotlights DJ DOC and Park Da-hye. May 4 brings the Royal Gomchwi Concert with Jang Yoon-jung and Kim Hong-nam. The festival closes on May 5 with a special Children’s Day family concert featuring Oksang Dalbit and a lineup of beloved children’s songs to lift the mood even higher.
Choi Jin-hee, secretary-general of the Yanggu Cultural Foundation, said, “We hope everyone—families, friends and couples alike—will leave with special memories made amid the scent and flavor of gomchwi at this festival.”
