Anseong, a city in Gyeonggi Province, officially opened Chilgok Lake Park on the 26th — the second phase in its push to become a lake tourism destination.
The project aims to give residents a safe, comfortable place to unwind and to boost the local economy by drawing visitors, supporting sustainable community growth. Chilgok Lake Park also continues a campaign promise by the city to develop tourism and leisure industries linked along a lake tourism belt.

The project builds on earlier work at Geumgwang Lake, the first anchor of the plan, which has already developed a strong tourism base. As part of the 2024 Geumbukjeongmaek National Ecological and Cultural Trail initiative, the city added plans for a sky observatory and elevated trail linked to Geumgwang Lake. In May 2025 the Su-seok-jeong waterfront garden at Geumgwang Lake was completed, giving visitors a viewing deck, picnic spots, and floral gardens. Today Geumgwang Lake is promoted as one of Anseong’s eight signature scenic spots.
Riding that momentum, Chilgok Lake Park is poised to become the next major hub in Anseong’s lake tourism network. Designed to showcase the lake’s famous sunsets, the park offers dedicated viewing and relaxation areas. Its showpiece, the musical fountain “Light of Memory,” is the country’s first fountain explicitly themed around the March 1st Movement.
Importantly, Anseong’s official culture and tourism site groups the park with nearby attractions like the Anseong March 1st Movement Memorial Hall and the Chilgok cafe street, signaling that visitors can easily extend their outing beyond the park to include history and culture.

The city is also strengthening connections among regional attractions. Anseong’s tourism site includes Chilgok Lake on recommended driving routes and highlights Geumgwang Lake and Anseong Farmland as signature stops in its “Anseong 8 Scenic Spots” lineup. That means Chilgok Lake Park will link with existing draws — the Geumgwang Lake sky observatory, Anseong Farmland, and the March 1st Movement Memorial Hall — and act as a hub that encourages visitors to linger longer.
The overall project cost was ₩27.5 billion (about $20.6 million). Of that, ₩10.5 billion (approximately $7.9 million) went to land acquisition, and the remaining ₩17.0 billion (around $12.8 million) funded the park itself and core infrastructure: the musical fountain, decked rest areas, pedestrian bridges, parking, and access roads. The musical fountain “Light of Memory” performs at 8:00 PM on weekdays (except Mondays) and twice — at 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM — on weekends and public holidays; schedules are subject to change in severe rain or strong winds.
For now the city will run Chilgok Lake Park in a soft-opening phase to identify and fix any issues raised by visitors before moving to full formal operations.
