[MyDaily = Reporter Kim Geon-ho] Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk publicly thanked manager Arne Slot following the club’s announcement of Slot’s departure.
On May 30 (Korean time), Liverpool said Slot would step down from his role immediately and that the club had begun the process of appointing a successor.
Slot, who took charge for the 2024–25 campaign, delivered a Premier League title in his first season. Ahead of that season, Liverpool invested heavily in the summer transfer window, spending about £440 million (approximately 897 billion KRW, about $672.8 million).
But the following season did not live up to expectations. Liverpool finished the year without a trophy and could only take solace in securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
Club leadership reviewed Slot’s position after the season and ultimately decided to part ways with the manager.
The Daily Mail reported on June 1 that the decision came as a surprise to many players who believed the squad had weathered recent turbulence. With Slot leaving just a year after guiding Liverpool to the title, several players posted heartfelt messages thanking him for his work.
Van Dijk wrote on social media, “I’ll never forget winning the Premier League in our first season together. Thank you, coach. I wish you and your family all the best.”
Ryan Gravenberch posted, “Thanks for everything, coach! Lifting the PL trophy together was an incredible achievement and a moment I’ll never forget. I hope only good things come your way.”
Curtis Jones wrote, “Thank you, and I wish you only the best going forward. I respect you as a person for what you’ve given our club.”
Alexis Mac Allister added, “I’ll always be grateful for the time we shared. Winning the Premier League isn’t easy, and you were a big part of that success. Thank you, and I wish you many blessings ahead.”
Cody Gakpo posted, “Thank you, coach. I wish you only good things ahead. God bless.”
New signing Hugo Ekitike said, “I appreciate everything you’ve taught me on and off the pitch and the time you’ve given me. I wish you nothing but the best in your future.”
