[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Yoshinobu Yamamoto was masterful on the mound as the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-1.
The Dodgers beat the Phillies 9-1 on June 1 (Korea time) at Uniqlo Field at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in a 2026 Major League Baseball home game.
The victory moved Los Angeles to 38-21, keeping them atop the National League West. They extended their lead over the second-place San Diego Padres (32-26) to 5.5 games.
Philadelphia fell to 30-29 and remains third in the NL East.
Japanese right-hander Yamamoto, the Dodgers’ starter, delivered one of his best outings of the season: 5.1 scoreless innings, four hits, 10 strikeouts and two walks, improving to 5-4 on the year.
Offensively, Shohei Ohtani recorded multiple hits, and Alex Freeland—who’s been mentioned as a possible rival for Kim Hye-seong—went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Phillies starter Andrew Painter lasted 3.1 innings, giving up seven hits (two homers), three strikeouts, one walk and four runs, taking his sixth loss of the season (1-6).
The Dodgers put up runs in every inning from the second through the ninth. In the bottom of the second, after Max Muncy singled with two outs and a runner on first, Freeland chased a slider from Painter for the game’s first run.
In the third, with Freddy Freeman on second and two outs, Kyle Tucker delivered an RBI single. In the fourth, solo homers by Ryan Ward and Freeland pushed the lead further.
The Dodgers kept the pressure on. In the bottom of the fifth, after Mookie Betts walked and Tucker doubled to create a two-out, runners-at-second-and-third chance, Alex Cole followed with a two-run single. In the sixth, Andy Pages tripled and Freeman added a sacrifice fly to right. Muncy then hit a solo homer in the seventh, extending the lead to 8-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers loaded the bases when Freeland walked, Ohtani singled and Pages walked; Freeman’s sacrifice fly made it 9-0 heading to the ninth.
Philadelphia’s offense, quiet through eight innings, finally got on the board in the top of the ninth on Bryson Stott’s solo homer, but could not muster any more runs. The game ended as a 9-1 Dodgers win.
