Ticket prices for the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup have soared, so New York City will give 1,000 residents a chance to see matches in person for just $50 (approximately 75,000 KRW) through a lottery. Mayor Joran Mamdani announced the plan at a May 21 press conference at Harlem Tavern in Harlem’s “Little Senegal,” joined by Alex Lasry, chair of the World Cup New York–New Jersey Host Committee, and U.S. men’s national team forward Timothy Weah. “We know ticket prices for this tournament have climbed into the thousands of dollars,” Mamdani said, adding that he wants to ensure the workers who helped bring the World Cup to the region aren’t priced out. “To put it simply,” he joked, “that’s the price of five lattes in New York.” An Arsenal FC fan, Mamdani posted on X that “last year we promised we’d fight for cheaper tickets for New Yorkers. Today, I’m proud to announce we did it—like Arsenal.”

New York City will open the lottery at regnyctix.com at 10 a.m. daily from May 25 through May 30. The city will accept up to 50,000 entries per day. Residents may enter once per day, for a maximum of six entries total. Winners will have 48 hours to purchase up to two tickets at $50 each (approximately 75,000 KRW each). The city will provide free round‑trip bus transportation to the stadium for ticket holders. To prevent scalping, tickets are nontransferable; after verifying residency, officials will hand tickets directly to winners at the game‑day bus pickup point. The lottery covers tickets for five group‑stage matches and two knockout matches (excluding the final) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — labeled by FIFA as the “New York/New Jersey Stadium” — with roughly 150 tickets allocated per game. The July 19 final will be at MetLife Stadium but is not included in this lottery.

FIFA’s adoption of “dynamic pricing,” which lets prices fluctuate with demand, has been widely criticized for driving ticket costs sky‑high. Ticket‑tracking platform TicketData reports that, as of May 20, the average ticket price for group‑stage matches at the New York/New Jersey Stadium was $864 (approximately 1,302,000 KRW). A top‑tier seat for the July 19 final could cost as much as $33,000 (approximately 49,740,000 KRW). #WorldCup #Soccer #FIFA #Tickets #Admissions Yonhap News TV — tips and inquiries: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23; Reporter Shin Juwon (nanjuhee@yna.co.kr)
