[MyDaily = Reporter Noh Chan-hyeok] Ibrahima Konaté is set to leave Liverpool this summer as a free agent.
On May 29 (KST), Sky Sports reported that Konaté plans to depart Anfield after five years with the club.
The French defender is primarily a center-back. Standing 1.94 meters (6 ft 4 in), Konaté combines aerial strength and ball-playing ability, and he uses his pace effectively to cover space behind the back line.
A product of the FC Sochaux-Montbéliard academy, Konaté broke into the first team in 2017–18 and moved to RB Leipzig that summer. He stood out at Leipzig, making 95 appearances and scoring four goals across four seasons.
Konaté joined Liverpool ahead of the 2021–22 season. He quickly established himself as a starting center-back, went on to make 183 appearances and score seven goals, and helped Liverpool lift five trophies, including one Premier League title.
However, Konaté has decided to leave Liverpool this summer. The club attempted to negotiate a new contract before his deal expired, but the sides failed to reach an agreement.
Sky Sports reports that talks over an extension broke down, leaving Konaté to depart as a free agent. The outlet added that he has been linked with several European clubs since the start of the year but has yet to pick his next destination.
Real Madrid appears to be the leading contender for Konaté’s signature. The Spanish club is looking to reinforce its center-back options this summer, and Konaté has been linked with Los Blancos since early in the season.
If Konaté heads to Real, Liverpool would lose another key defender to Madrid on a free transfer for the second consecutive year. Ahead of this season, Liverpool academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold reportedly joined Real as a free agent.
