[Herald Economy=Reporter Na Eun-jeong] Gwangju Jeil High School right-hander Park Chan-min, long regarded as one of South Korea’s top pitching prospects, has signed with Major League Baseball’s Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies announced on the 24th (Korea time) that they reached an international amateur contract with the Korean prospect Park Chan-min.
According to Philadelphia Insider and MLB.com, Park received a 1,830,000,000 KRW signing bonus (approximately $1,205,000).
That figure is the largest bonus the Phillies have given a pitcher among their international amateur signings this year and ranks as the club’s second-largest international signing overall, behind Venezuelan outfielder Francisco Renteria, who received $4 million.
To free up the necessary international bonus pool money, the Phillies reportedly traded two minor-league players last month. MLB teams are limited in how much they can spend on international amateur picks, so this level of investment underscores the organization’s belief in Park’s upside.
Standing 191 cm (6 ft 3 in), Park appeared in 12 high-school games this season, going 6-0 with a 1.37 ERA. He features a fastball that peaks in the 150 km/h range (about 93 mph) and mixes in a slider, curve and splitter. Scouts have praised his physicality and projectability.
Park is the first high-school graduate in this year’s class to sign with a U.S. club.
