[By Kang Tae-gu, Sports Today] Ji-hwan Bae, an outfielder in the New York Mets system, extended his Triple-A hitting streak to nine games.
On May 22 at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y., Bae started in left field and hit cleanup for the Syracuse Mets against the Buffalo Bisons (a Toronto Blue Jays affiliate). He finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs.
The outing pushed his hitting streak to nine games and continued to strengthen his case for a big-league call-up. It was also his 12th multi-hit game of the season.
His Triple-A average rose to .299 (41-for-137).
Bae opened the game with a groundout to second in the first. He led off the fourth with a single to right but was caught stealing.
In the fifth, he grounded out to short. In the sixth, with two outs and runners on first and second, he delivered an RBI single to right.
The next batter, Yonny Hernández, struck out, ending that rally.
In the eighth, with Syracuse leading 9-6 and runners at the corners with one out, Bae hit an infield grounder. The runner trying to take second was thrown out, but Bae reached first with an RBI.
He later moved to third on Hernández’s single and scored on a double by Christian Pache.
Syracuse eventually prevailed in the high-scoring affair, 12-8.
