[mdtoday = Reporter Kim Gyo-sik] San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo was scratched from the starting lineup on Friday with a back cramp, but the club does not expect to place him on the injured list (IL). Team officials said his condition has improved and indicated a quicker-than-expected return is possible.
The Mercury News reported on May 20 that Lee complained of back pain and was removed during the previous day’s game; he did not play in Friday’s matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
\”He’s a lot better than last night,\” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. \”We still need to monitor his recovery for a bit.\”
Melvin stressed that the team will prioritize rest over rushing Lee back. \”We decided treatment and rest are best for today,\” he said, adding that during the season it’s wiser to be cautious than to overuse a player. Will Brennan filled in for Lee and went 0-for-4.
Meanwhile, shortstop Willy Adames, who suffered a hand issue earlier the same day, returned to the starting lineup. \”He always wants to play,\” Melvin said, noting that the training staff cleared him to play.
Without Lee, the Giants’ offense struggled in a 5-3 loss to Arizona, dropping the club into a losing streak. With the team’s leadoff man sidelined, a prompt return is a priority; local reports project Lee could be back for the May 21 game in Arizona or the May 23 series opener against the Chicago White Sox.
