Jose Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid: What Does His 2029 Contract Extension Mean for the Team?

By Park Dae-hyun, SPOTV News — Real Madrid appears to be putting its full weight behind its new coach. The club has added a one-year extension option to José Mourinho’s contract.

Transfer-market specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on the 20th (KST) that Real Madrid agreed to include a one-year extension, which pushes the deal through June 2029. Romano said the parties have completed the final agreements and the signing process.

Romano added that both Mourinho and Real Madrid’s legal team have signed off, and that the Portuguese coach is expected in Madrid next week. “Practically every step is finished — this is a ‘HERE WE GO’–level confirmation,” he wrote.

With the new season looming, Real has chosen the hardline Mourinho as the figure to spark a turnaround.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013.

At the time, the club tapped the Portuguese tactician to counter Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, which had reshaped global soccer with its “tiki-taka” approach.

Before taking the helm at Real, Mourinho had won the Premier League with Chelsea and delivered a historic treble with Inter Milan, making him an obvious candidate.

His three-season run in Madrid yielded one La Liga title and one Copa del Rey.

But in his third year he fell into disputes with senior players — including Cristiano Ronaldo, Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos — and results dipped, leading to his exit.

Mourinho then had spells in the Premier League and Serie A before returning to Portugal last year to take charge of SL Benfica.

He’s continued to show strong leadership there this season.

Under Mourinho, Benfica pulled off a notable Champions League upset this season by beating Mourinho’s former side, Real Madrid, in the group stage.

On Jan. 28, Benfica stunned Europe with a 4–2 home win. Needing a two-goal victory to advance on goal difference, they led 3–2 when goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin scored a stoppage-time header to complete the dramatic finish.

Real Madrid is facing a crisis. The club boasts multiple superstars — Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé — but they haven’t come together as a cohesive unit.

The team has slumped dramatically since the early dismissal of Xabi Alonso.

President Florentino Pérez appears to have turned to the disciplinarian Mourinho to restore order and get the star-studded squad under control.

The initial deal was reported to be two years.

Romano had also posted on the 18th that all terms between Mourinho and Real were agreed verbally and only signatures remained, with the contract slated for two years.

By triggering the one-year extension option before Mourinho has even arrived in Madrid, the club sent a clear message to the dressing room.

By publicly empowering the new coach, Real handed the keys to revive the fallen La Liga powerhouse to the 65-year-old veteran strategist making his return after 13 years.
