[MyDaily = Reporter Shim Hye-jin] San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo exited the game with back pain and was removed, leaving his injury status in question.
On May 19 (KST) at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, Lee started in right field and batted leadoff for the Giants in their road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, going 1-for-2.
He now carries a .268 batting average on the season with a .696 OPS.
Lee returned to the lineup after a two-day absence and recorded a hit.
He flew out in his first plate appearance in the first inning. In the third, with one out and a runner in scoring position at second and the Giants trailing 1-5, Lee pulled the third pitch — a slider from starter Zac Gallen — into right field for a single. The ball registered an exit velocity of 99.3 mph (about 159.8 km/h). The hit extended his streak to five straight games with a hit.
The single left runners at first and third, and Luis Arraez followed with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 2-5.
Lee was replaced before the bottom of the fourth inning.
Updates on his condition followed. Shana Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Lee left the game with back spasms.
He wasn’t the only injury concern. Shortstop Willy Adames was struck by a batted ball while fielding and suffered a bruised thumb.
Both players looked to be in questionable shape. Justice Delos Santos of The Mercury News quoted manager Tony Vitello as saying Lee is unlikely to play in Tuesday’s (the 20th) game. The team plans to monitor Adames’ bruised thumb and reassess his status.
