[MyDaily = Shim Hye-jin] LA Dodgers’ Kim Hye-seong reached base multiple times for a second straight game, delivering solid work on both offense and defense. San Diego Padres’ Song Seong-moon entered as a defensive replacement but did not record a plate appearance.
On May 19 (KST) at Petco Park in San Diego, California, Kim started at second base and batted ninth, going 1-for-2 with a walk against the San Diego Padres in a 2026 Major League Baseball game.
Kim’s season batting average rose to .278.
The day before (May 18), Kim produced an impressive performance, collecting multiple hits and a walk to reach base three times.
He came to the plate in the top of the third with two outs and the Dodgers trailing 0-1. With the count 1-2, Kim swung and missed on Michael King’s fourth pitch — an 86.7-mph changeup — and struck out.
His second at-bat was different. In the top of the sixth with two outs and no one on, Kim drove King’s third pitch, an 83.1-mph sinker, into right field for a single — his second straight game with a hit. Later, Shohei Ohtani hit a grounder; the catcher fielded it and threw to first, but the throw sailed wide. Kim used his speed to race to third, but Mookie Betts then popped out to second, and the Dodgers missed the chance to tie the game.
Kim came up again in the top of the eighth with two outs. Facing reliever Jason Adam, he displayed a sharp eye and drew a walk, marking his second straight multi-time on-base game.
He again hustled to third after Ohtani’s single to right, but Betts couldn’t push the rally — he grounded to short — and the Dodgers once more failed to knot the score.
Kim also shined on defense. In the bottom of the seventh with no outs and a runner on first, he cleanly handled a grounder by Jackson Merrill. Despite a tricky hop, Kim smoothed the play and fired to second to retire the lead runner. Yamamoto applauded the highlight play.
The Dodgers had a chance in the ninth. Freddie Freeman and Kyle Tucker drew back-to-back walks, but Will Smith flew out to center and Max Muncy struck out. Andy Pages then grounded out to third, and the Dodgers couldn’t erase the one-run deficit.
With the loss, the Dodgers ceded first place in the NL West to San Diego.
Meanwhile, Song Seong-moon entered as a defensive replacement in the top of the eighth but did not get a plate appearance.
