Defending champion \”Soma\” Park Sang-hyun methodically dismantled Reta (Shin Sang-moon)’s strategies and punched his ticket to the ASL Season 21 final for the second consecutive season, taking the series 4-1 over five games.
On the evening of May 11 at FreakUp Studio in Seoul’s Gangnam district, Park beat Shin 4-1 in the first semifinal of Google Play ASL Season 21.
Game 1 on Silphid3 opened with Park at 8 o’clock and Shin at 12. Shin set up central barracks and trained marines, but Park’s early zerglings found success and cost Shin several units. As mutalisks and Lurkers traded harassment, Park expanded with extra drones and then launched an aerial assault on Shin’s main. Shin responded with turrets and Lurkers, but Park’s mutalisks slowly seized air control. With Shin’s economy stalled and his expansions contained, Park closed out the first map at 14:45.
Game 2 on Jane Do had Park at 2 and Shin at 8; both players expanded quickly. When Shin geared up air production with two Starports, Park answered with mutalisks and Scourges, attempting to bait a fight that Shin declined. Shin brought a force with a Science Vessel to Park’s front, but Park struck back with a combined land-and-air attack that inflicted heavy losses. Park’s zerglings then wiped out several marines, denying Shin a chance to stabilize. Park reinforced with ultralisks and defilers, pushed across the map, and his plague effects neutered Shin’s follow-up plans. Controlling most of the multis, Park surged toward the 9 o’clock expansion and, with overwhelming numbers, forced Shin to concede at 19:46.
In Game 3 on Octagon, Park started at 11 and Shin at 5. Park expanded quickly to 12, and after Shin secured a 1 o’clock base, Park tried to disrupt it but was held off. Reading Park’s shift toward mutalisks and ultralisks, Shin rallied a large ground force from his main and hit Park’s 12 o’clock expansion. Using dropships to draw attention and timing the attack off-beat, Shin destroyed the 12 o’clock base and dented Park’s front, claiming the map at 13:51.
Game 4 on Polstar saw Park at 1 and Shin at 7. Park massed zerglings early and added a few hydralisks to make his army look larger, while Shin produced tanks and moved into siege. Park’s scouting uncovered Shin’s setup, and although Shin added Starports later to field Scourges, Park pressed his advantage. A counter from Shin cut into Park’s attack timing, but Park combined a roaming defiler with lurkers to blunt Shin’s army and kept up the pressure, not giving Shin time to recover. Shin’s last attempt with two dropships fell short when Park shot one down, and Park closed the map to reach match point.
The deciding Game 5 on Knockout put Park at 7 and Shin at 11. Early air skirmishes favored Park, and he carried that momentum into the midgame. Shin used Vultures to harass Park’s multis and pushed a large force toward 4 o’clock that caught queens, but Park’s counterstrikes minimized the damage. Adding ultralisks to break Terran defenses in front of the multi, Park steadily ground Shin down, ignored a potential counterrush, and cleaned up the central engagements. He finished the match at 18:04 to secure his spot in the final.
