[Sports Today reporter Shin Seo-young] Left-hander Charlie Barnes, who spent four seasons with the KBO League’s Lotte Giants, has been claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers — the same organization that Kim Hye-sung is with.
The Dodgers announced on the 10th (Korean time) that they claimed Barnes off waivers after the Chicago Cubs designated him for assignment (DFA).
To open a spot on the 40-man roster, the club transferred infielder Tommy Edman, who underwent ankle surgery, to the 60-day injured list.
Barnes will not join the Dodgers’ major-league roster immediately; the team assigned him to its Triple-A affiliate, the Oklahoma City Comets, to get him settled.
Barnes is well known to Korean baseball fans. He signed with Lotte ahead of the 2022 season and spent four seasons there through 2025, appearing in 94 games with a 35-32 record and a 3.58 ERA.
In his first season, 2022, Barnes appeared in 31 games and worked 186.1 innings, finishing 12-12 with a 3.62 ERA. He followed that with 30 appearances in 2023, logging 170.1 innings and going 11-10 with a 3.28 ERA. In 2024 he posted a 9-6 record with a 3.35 ERA.
His 2025 season, however, unraveled. Over eight appearances he went 3-4 with a 5.32 ERA, then a left-shoulder injury disrupted his year and he was released in May.
Back in the U.S., Barnes signed a minor-league deal with the Cincinnati Reds and then moved to the Chicago Cubs ahead of the 2026 season.
He briefly returned to the major leagues with the Cubs, but on April 14 against the Philadelphia Phillies he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks across three innings and was optioned back to the minors.
After aiming to work his way back from Triple-A, Barnes was designated for assignment — and now he gets a fresh opportunity with the Dodgers after they claimed him on waivers.
