ASL Season 21: How Lee Jae-ho Defeated JD’s Lee Jae-dong in a Thrilling 3-2 Showdown

Translation result이제동에 ‘Light’ Lee Jae-ho, who took the first two sets and was pushed to a deciding game, leaned on superior firepower to shut down ‘JD’ Lee Jae-dong’s comeback hopes.

On the evening of the 4th at FreakUP Studio in Gangnam, Seoul, during match three of the Google Play ASL Season 21 quarterfinals, ‘Light’ Lee Jae-ho beat ‘JD’ Lee Jae-dong 3-2.

The first map—played on the match-point layout—opened with Lee Jae-dong at 7 o’clock and Lee Jae-ho at 1 o’clock. Both players went for fast natural expansions. When Lee Jae-ho sent Vultures toward the 10 o’clock direction as Lee Jae-dong attempted an expansion, he missed the timing by a hair and only confirmed the enemy movement after securing his own position.

Lee Jae-dong struck with Mutalisks and Scourge to pressure Lee’s base, but Lee answered by sending Reavers to harass an Overlord and forced the Mutalisks back. With a stronger production backbone, Lee Jae-ho pushed Marines and a Science Vessel toward the 11 o’clock area to buy time, and his Lurker timing held when Tanks later arrived.

Facing steady reinforcements, Lee Jae-dong fell behind in unit count. He pulled Drones from his 11 o’clock expansion to stall, but Lee Jae-ho kept up heavy pressure and secured the first set at 11:29.

The second set moved to the Jane Doe map, with Lee Jae-dong at 2 o’clock and Lee Jae-ho at 8 o’clock. Lee Jae-ho pushed toward the entrance and sent an SCV to harass the choke. Lee Jae-dong expanded quickly to 1 and 3 o’clock and fielded Hydralisks and Mutalisks. Lee Jae-ho built Turrets and sent Reavers into the opponent’s front yard that lacked Overlords, retreating only when Mutalisks chased them down.

As Lee Jae-dong staged guerrilla raids with Overlords and Mutalisks, Lee Jae-ho answered with Reavers and Marines, trimming the Zerg numbers. Tanks and a Science Vessel joined to secure positions. After Lee Jae-dong used air power to thin the Reaver force and followed with a ground attack led by Hydralisks, Lee Jae-ho hit back with Dropship drops carrying Marines and Firebats. The match turned into an attrition fight that struck both mains.

Lee Jae-ho destroyed Lee’s 6 o’clock expansion, cut income with harassment, and followed up with another Firebat drop. Lee Jae-dong tried to respond with Hydralisks but could not hold, and Lee Jae-ho closed out the second set at 23:26.

The third set on Silphid3 placed Lee Jae-dong at 8 o’clock and Lee Jae-ho at 4 o’clock. Both attempted front-yard expansions; Lee Jae-ho sent two Vultures for quick strikes, but Lee Jae-dong repelled them with clustered Drones. Lee Jae-ho used Reavers to destroy an Overlord while Lee Jae-dong countered with a Mutalisk–Scourge mix, then withdrew when cloaked Reavers forced a response.

Lee Jae-dong massed air units and moved into Lee’s base, but Lee had multiple Turrets and Reavers ready and defended without major trouble. After repeated attacks, Lee Jae-dong managed to take down Turrets near the 5 o’clock area, stabilized his main, rebuilt a force and sent bionic troops toward the 11 o’clock expansion to strike and pull back with Reavers.

As Lee Jae-ho continued to apply pressure, Lee Jae-dong massed troops, pushed back a Terran force, defended against a two-Dropship reinforcement, and shot down another incoming Dropship. Leading with Hydralisks against Marine columns, Lee Jae-dong destroyed several Science Vessels and dragged the game into the late stage.

Lee Jae-ho’s attempt to distract with a 1 o’clock expansion and a Dropship was thwarted. Lee Jae-dong flooded the central hill with Hydralisks and Zerglings, stopped three Dropship attempts with Hydras, and sent Ultralisks to the front, forcing a surrender at 27:01 and reigniting his comeback.

The fourth set on Pole Star had Lee Jae-dong at 11 o’clock and Lee Jae-ho at 1 o’clock. Both scouted and expanded; Lee Jae-ho tried to disrupt expansions with Marines and an SCV and even attempted bunkering but gave up under resistance. Lee Jae-dong probed with Zerglings and later deployed Mutalisks, but Lee met them with a large Marine contingent. Lee advanced to the front of the 10 o’clock expansion but was easily repelled; a ground push was beaten back by three Lurkers.

Lee Jae-dong then expanded through 8 to 7 o’clock, where his forces pressured Lee’s multis with hit-and-run attacks and inflicted steady losses. Lee Jae-ho pulled out two Battlecruisers to strike the 7 o’clock multibase but couldn’t break the defense. Seizing the opportunity, Lee Jae-dong poured in Ultralisks and Mutalisks to build a 200-strong army, pushed through Lee’s attack, won the central engagement and broke in through the 3 o’clock choke.

Lee Jae-dong continued to reinforce and struck multiple multis at once, keeping the offensive until he leveled the series at 19:57.

The deciding fifth set on Octagon started with Lee Jae-dong at 11 o’clock and Lee Jae-ho at 5 o’clock. Lee Jae-ho flashed three Vultures into the enemy front yard; Lee Jae-dong answered with Mutalisks and Zerglings and eliminated Marines.

To counter Mutalisks, Lee Jae-ho built three Valkyries, advanced with Marines and pushed a Science Vessel and Tanks onto the central hill—though a Lurker managed to take out one Tank. Still, Lee used superior numbers to enter the enemy entrance, eliminated Lurkers and Zerglings, then overwhelmed an incoming Hydralisk force. He destroyed the 12 o’clock multibase and widened the firepower gap.

Turning the hill and heading for the enemy main, Lee cleared the 9 o’clock multibase, converged his forces on the opponent’s choke and secured the final set point and a ticket to the semifinals at 14:32.
