In the third quarterfinal of the Google Play ASL Season 21 at Freakup Studio in Gangnam, Seoul, on the evening of May 4, ‘Light’ Lee Jae-ho defeated ‘JD’ Lee Jae-dong, 3–2.
After the full-series win, Lee said, \”My preparation went so well that I worried it might backfire, which makes this hard-fought victory feel even more valuable.\” He broke down the early momentum: \”The first set went exactly as I planned. In the second, I guessed what my opponent might prepare and adjusted accordingly — that paid off.\”
Reflecting on the third and fourth sets, Lee admitted, \”I had the advantage in the third, but his responses were extremely clean. Losing the fourth shook my confidence — I even thought I might lose.\” On the decisive fifth game, he explained, \”Instead of the current meta mech approach, I opted for a different timing strategy. My opponent invested resources in attack upgrades to counter mech, which left an opening I managed to exploit.\”
Asked whom he’d prefer to face in the semifinals — ‘Snow’ Jang Yoon-chul or ‘Flash’ Lee Young-ho — Lee said he’d pick Lee Young-ho. \”Flash gave me confidence on the offline stage, and I want to see how much I’ve grown against him after his return,\” Lee said, adding that mirror matchups also tend to be less affected by balance changes.
Now in his 30s, Lee spoke about his longstanding love for StarCraft: \”I used to watch Lim Yo-hwan and dream of being a thirty-something pro. I’m already there, which surprises me, but I plan to keep playing as long as I can. I also feel a bigger responsibility to make matches more entertaining for viewers.\”
Grading his performance, Lee said, \”If you don’t factor in the offline setting, I made a lot of mistakes, so I’d give myself about a 70. But I want to reward myself for overcoming the pressure.\” He closed by thanking his family, teammates and fans who came to the venue: \”Their support gave me a lot of strength. I’ll prepare well for the semifinals, push into the final and aim for the championship.\”
