[Herald Economy (Gyeongsan)=Reporter Kim Byung-jin] World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) President Choue Chung-won visited Daekyung University’s Hallyu Campus in Namyangju on the 22nd at the invitation of founder and chair Yu Jin-seon, delivering a special lecture titled “New Possibilities for World Taekwondo” to roughly 200 students in the university’s Taekwondo program.
In the lecture, Choue outlined how Taekwondo has grown into a global sport and sketched strategies for its next phase of development.
“Taekwondo now counts members in more than 215 countries and holds an important place among Olympic sports,” he said.
He emphasized the sport’s globalization and long-term direction.
Choue pointed to Taekwondo’s Olympic status and recent expansion in poomsae, demonstration teams and para-Taekwondo, urging students to become active agents of the sport’s global growth.
He also highlighted an emblematic moment of international recognition — a Taekwondo statue installed in Lausanne, Switzerland, home of the International Olympic Committee — noting, “Taekwondo became the eighth Olympic sport to receive a commemorative sculpture,” to underscore its global standing.
Near the end of his address, he stressed the role university students must play.
“Daekyung alumni who served on demonstration teams are active on the world stage,” Choue said. “I hope more students advance internationally and help globalize Taekwondo.”
Yu Jin-seon, chair of Daekyung University, added, “Today’s lecture showed students how to shape Taekwondo’s future. The Taekwondo Department at Daekyung University will redouble its efforts to develop talent that can compete on the world stage.”
