[SPOTV NEWS=Reporter Jang Ha-jun] Coventry City finally ended a 25-year wait, securing promotion back to the English Premier League (EPL).
On April 18 (Korean time), Coventry drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in the 43rd round of the 2025–26 Championship. Ryoya Morishita put Blackburn ahead nine minutes into the second half, but Bobby Thomas rose to head home an equalizer six minutes from time to earn Coventry a crucial point.
The draw moved Coventry to 86 points and stretched their lead over third-place Millwall to 13 points, a gap that guarantees at least second place and an automatic promotion spot to the Premier League. In the Championship, the top two teams are promoted automatically.
They also hold comfortable breathing room over second-place Ipswich Town, keeping Coventry very much in the running for the title.
This promotion is especially significant: it ends a quarter-century absence from the top flight since relegation in 2000–01. Once a mainstay in England’s top division for 34 seasons, Coventry later endured financial problems and a dramatic fall to the third—and even fourth—tiers.
The club has mounted a steady comeback. After returning to the Championship in 2020–21, Coventry rebuilt and, under manager Frank Lampard this season, put together a dominant campaign that clinched promotion early. Lampard will also return to the Premier League as a manager.
But one notable absence at this historic moment was Yang Min-hyuk.
Yang transferred to Tottenham Hotspur in the winter of 2025 and has been out on loan since. Following stints with Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth, he joined Coventry but has since been pushed completely out of the club’s plans.
He has been omitted from the matchday squad for 12 consecutive league games. His total playing time for Coventry stands at just 29 minutes across three league appearances and 72 minutes in one FA Cup match, and he has not registered any goal contributions.
