Kim Min-kyu (25, Korean GC), who struggled to meet expectations after the season opener, finally looks poised to take off.
On April 16 (local time) at Chapultepec Golf Club in Mexico City (par 71), Kim fired a 4-under 67 in the first round of LIV Golf Mexico City and sits tied for third.
He dropped a shot at the 1st but swung the momentum with a birdie on the par-3 4th. He added another birdie at the 6th and then delivered a spectacular eagle on the par-5 7th.
With 115 yards to the pin, his third shot with a wedge landed on the green, spun back sharply and rolled into the cup.
After two bogeys that briefly slowed him, Kim closed the round with three late birdies to finish strongly.
Kim has played all five events so far this season but has struggled for results; his best finish remains a tie for 32nd at Adelaide, the season’s second event.
His Korean GC teammates also contributed. Song Young-han matched Kim’s position, while captain An Byeong-hun shot 1-under to finish tied for 24th. Danny Lee, however, fell to 57th after a 7-over round.
Victor Perez leads at 9-under, with Jon Rahm chasing at 6-under after a 65. Korean GC sits sixth in the team rankings and is chasing its best-ever finish.
