[Sports Today reporter Shin Seo-young] Lincoln City clinched promotion to the Championship — the club’s first return to England’s second tier in 65 years.
Lincoln beat Reading 2-1 at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in Reading on April 6 (KST) in their 2025–26 League One match.
The victory extended Lincoln’s unbeaten run to 24 matches and pushed their record to 27 wins, 9 draws and 5 losses (90 points), sealing promotion to the Championship.
In League One, the top two teams earn automatic promotion. The win widened Lincoln’s margin over second-place Cardiff City (78 points) and Bradford City (71 points), making promotion secure with five games remaining.
This marks Lincoln’s return to the second tier for the first time since the 1960–61 season — a span of 65 years.
Founded in 1884, Lincoln have never played in the Premier League and have spent the majority of their history between the second and fourth tiers.
After relegation from the second tier in 1961, the club spent decades in the third and fourth tiers and even dropped to the fifth tier from 2011–12 through 2016–17.
They won promotion back to the fourth tier in 2017–18, moved up to League One in 2019–20, and this season finally earned a return to the Championship.
The finish was dramatic. With the score tied 1-1, Jack Moylan fired a powerful strike in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time to complete a 2-1 victory.
The BBC noted that, with one of the league’s best attacks and defenses, Lincoln’s rise is hardly surprising — some might even call it inevitable. All that’s left is to clinch the League One title for the first time since 1952 to cap off the season.
Lincoln manager Michael Skubala said, \”We want to win the title. The players have told me they really want it.\” He added with a smile, \”We’ll enjoy tonight and go out for a beer.\”
He continued, \”I can’t believe it. The players have been superb all season. Securing promotion over Easter is perfect.\”
