[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Lee Jung-hoo, the Giants’ leadoff hitter and right fielder, registered his first hit of the season but couldn’t prevent San Francisco from dropping a 3-1 decision to the New York Yankees on March 29 at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
Lee went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. After starting the series 0-for-4 in the March 26 opener and 0-for-3 on March 28, he finally broke through with a double for his first hit of the year.
His batting average sits at .100 (1-for-10).
In the bottom of the first, batting leadoff, Lee chased a second-pitch four-seam fastball from starter Will Warren — clocked at 94.3 mph — and grounded out to second.
He answered in the third. Leading off the inning, Lee hammered an 85.8-mph sweeper from Warren into right field for a double.
He later rounded third and scored on a Matt Chapman single.
Lee also showcased plate discipline. In the fifth, with one out and the bases empty, he drew a seven-pitch walk to reach first.
The rally stalled, and he was left on base.
Trailing 1-3 in the seventh with two outs, Lee came up for his fourth at-bat and struck out looking against reliever Tim Hill.
The Yankees prevailed, 3-1.
The loss completed a three-game sweep by New York, leaving San Francisco 0-3 to open the season.
Giants starter Tyler Mahle took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings with five strikeouts and one walk.
Yankees starter Will Warren didn’t factor into the decision after 4.1 innings, yielding five hits, one run, three strikeouts and two walks. Jake Bird earned the win, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
