[Sports Today reporter Shin Seo-young] Daejeon Hana Citizen, coming off a much-needed first league win, will welcome Jeonbuk Hyundai in a battle between early title contenders.
Daejeon host Jeonbuk Hyundai on the 21st at 2 p.m. at Daejeon World Cup Stadium in Round 5 of the 2026 Hana Bank K League 1.
Daejeon sit third with six points (one win, three draws).
The club earned its first win of the season on the 18th, beating Incheon United. After three straight 1-1 draws to open the campaign, Daejeon took the lead in Incheon when Masa opened the scoring. Even after conceding an equalizer, Diogo and Eom Won-sang produced late strikes to seal a 3-1 victory.
The result mattered beyond the points. It relieved pressure on the squad and injected momentum into the locker room.
Park Gyu-hyun returned from injury and started at left fullback, providing a boost to the back line.
Babsin has also been seeing more minutes and regaining match sharpness. He came off the bench against Incheon and showed incisive movement in midfield.
Up front, Diogo and Eom Won-sang are starting to build chemistry. Even when an injury issue surfaced during the match, the team stayed composed and managed the game professionally — a positive sign for Daejeon.
Now the focus shifts to Jeonbuk. Both teams were tipped as title hopefuls before the season. After the Incheon game, coach Hwang Sun-hong said the squad isn’t perfect yet, but the win should help. He emphasized that preparing well for Saturday’s clash with Jeonbuk is the team’s top priority.
Daejeon have struggled against Jeonbuk recently. The clubs met in the preseason Super Cup this year, with Daejeon falling 0-2, and last season Daejeon managed just one draw and three losses against Jeonbuk. Ending that trend will be crucial.
Coincidentally, Jeonbuk also picked up their first win of the season in their previous match, beating FC Anyang 2-1. With both title contenders arriving in similar form, the matchup promises to be intense. As the only K League 1 fixture that day, it will draw significant attention.
