By Bae Munsuk, Herald Economy The Social Reform Committee under the Prime Minister announced on June 2 that, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and the Korea Customs Service, it will launch a public-private consultative body to manage imported agricultural products at the end of this month.
The committee said the consultative body’s launch is one of the urgent action items it announced at a national report conference last March. The initiative is intended to oversee imported farm products and reform related regulations from the perspectives of domestic producers and consumers.
The committee plans to establish a working task force (TF) to define the consultative body’s membership, responsibilities, agenda items and other operational details.
Chairman Park Seok-woon said he expects the consultative body to help mitigate the downward pressure that low-priced imports place on domestic farm prices, while also strengthening food safety for consumers.
