“Rescheduling the event”
The Ministry of Employment and Labor has postponed a tentative \”Korean-style Social Solidarity Wage\” forum that had been scheduled for the first of next month.
On the 28th, the ministry said it is rescheduling the forum to gather a broader range of views. It added that it will announce the forum’s agenda and specific timing once those details are finalized.
At a roundtable with reporters the previous day, Minister Kim Young-hoon said social dialogue is the only solution to disputes over how excess profits at large companies are shared. He announced plans for an emergency forum on the first.
Some critics argued the government was trying to compel profit-sharing from large firms. Kim pushed back on Facebook, calling claims that the government would seize and redistribute corporate profits baseless and saying the government has no authority to forcibly intervene in a company’s legitimate earnings.
The ministry also issued a briefing saying that compelling large companies to share profits would be entirely at odds with the purpose and intent of social dialogue. Still, analysts say the ministry appears to be slowing the process in response to public sentiment.
