Samsung Electronics Strike: Will It Lead to Billions in Losses?

Daniel Kim Views

Translation result. On Samsung Electronics (005930) When the Samsung Electronics labor union moved to hold a rally in front of Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s residence, a shareholders’ group announced it would stage a counter-rally.

On April 26, sources in the business community said the Korea Shareholders’ Movement Headquarters, which has opposed Samsung’s union activities, notified police that it will hold a rally in front of the chairman’s residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the 21st of next month.

The date appears intended to counter a separate event organized by the Samsung cross-company union, which plans to gather at 1:00 p.m. that same day in front of the chairman’s residence to announce a general-strike plan. The union is calling for institutional abolition of the cap on performance bonuses and has announced a general strike from the 21st of next month through June 7.

On April 23, when the Samsung union held a rally of some 40,000 people at the Pyeongtaek plant, the Shareholders’ Movement issued a nearby statement arguing that the union’s excessive demands infringe on shareholders’ property rights.
