To Support Research on Inequality
On April 17, the National Tax Service (Commissioner Im Gwang-hyeon) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Assembly Legislative Research Office, under the chairmanship of Speaker Woo Won-sik, to bolster cooperation in using administrative data to address inequality.
The agreement is designed to establish a cooperative framework that leverages the National Tax Service’s administrative data—such as income records—to advance the National Assembly’s ongoing “multidimensional inequality index” and to support effective legislative and policy research.
The National Assembly Legislative Research Office said it will begin with the National Tax Service and collaborate with other agencies that hold essential administrative data for inequality research, with the goal of expanding the use of such data.
The two agencies said the agreement will help address longstanding limits on administrative data access and the lack of cross-agency data linkage.
Im Gwang-hyeon, commissioner of the National Tax Service, said, “Establishing data governance that safely shares and uses valuable tax data to generate greater social value is a core capability of the National Tax Service. We will work with the National Assembly to ensure tax data serves as a foundation for accurately diagnosing society’s problems.”
