On April 17, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism appointed food columnist Hwang Gyo-ik as president of the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute. His term is three years, running through April 2029.
The Korea Culture and Tourism Institute is an agency under the ministry that conducts research, surveys and evaluations to advance the arts, cultural industries and tourism.
Hwang began his career as a reporter for the Farmers’ Newspaper. He later worked as a research fellow at the Local Intellectual Property Center, served as director of the Seoul Craft Fair, and chaired the organizing committee for the Busan Food Film Festa.
He is best known to the public as a food columnist and has written extensively and appeared on broadcasts discussing food, regional culture and everyday lifestyle sensibilities.
The institute also supports policy development in culture and tourism and produces and analyzes related statistics. It functions primarily as a foundational research body that links cultural practice with policymaking.
As president, Hwang will oversee the institute’s research and investigative work on arts, tourism and content policy. Observers say a central challenge for the new leadership will be producing policy recommendations that respond promptly and effectively to changes on the ground.
Minister Choi Hwi-young said, \”With his deep insight and extensive field experience, we expect him to reform the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute and help it emerge as a leading research institution for K-culture.\”
