[Sports Today reporter Jeong Ye-won] A YouTuber who gained popularity with fighting-focused and vigilante-style content was handed over to prosecutors while in custody on charges that include assault against a colleague.
According to a Yonhap News report on the 11th, the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency’s Major Investigation Unit transferred YouTuber Um (surname withheld) to prosecutors on charges including assault, causing bodily injury in concert with others, and coercion.
In March of last year, Um allegedly assaulted fellow YouTuber Kim (surname withheld) after an altercation. Police say he has repeatedly assaulted Kim and three other YouTubers, with incidents continuing into this year.
Investigators say recordings of Um’s YouTube broadcasts capture him directing insults and verbal abuse at the victims. He has reportedly admitted to those allegations. Authorities also say Um was previously arrested and indicted on extortion charges for threatening acquaintances of the perpetrator in the so-called \”Apgujeong Rolls‑Royce\” case and extracting several hundred million KRW (roughly $150,000); he was later released on bail.
Um had about 500,000 subscribers and drew attention for producing content that portrayed punitive actions against the \”Nammunpa,\” a violent group in Suwon.
