Police found a bag containing firearms on a street near London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s home and are investigating. Local media report that officers assigned to Khan’s security may have accidentally left the bag behind. Khan, who has faced repeated threats, is under 24-hour armed police protection.
On the 3rd (local time), the Guardian and other outlets reported that the Metropolitan Police said officers responded to a member of the public’s call and recovered a bag containing firearms and a Taser from a south London street at about 9:40 p.m. on the 31st of last month.
The force said it currently suspects that on-duty officers briefly left the bag by mistake. Recognizing the seriousness of the incident, it has launched an urgent investigation and removed five officers from frontline duties pending the probe.
A man who works as a scaffolder told the tabloid The Sun that his girlfriend found the bag on the street. He said he brought it home, opened it, and found a Heckler & Koch MP5 semi-automatic carbine, a Glock pistol, a Taser, and ammunition inside.
A spokesperson for Mayor Khan called the incident \”extremely serious\” and said police must take all necessary measures to prevent a recurrence.
