In Chuncheon, a lodging proprietor who noticed a visibly anxious guest in his 70s foiled a voice‑phishing scheme and protected the man’s retirement funds of ₩100,000,000 (about $72,600).
Chuncheon Police announced on April 2 that they will present a letter of appreciation and a monetary reward to the proprietor, identified only as A, after he detained a suspected voice‑phishing courier and turned the suspect over to police.
On the evening of March 30, A became suspicious when guest B, a man in his 70s, trembled and spoke incoherently while checking in.
While reviewing CCTV footage, A saw an unidentified man receive an item in front of the property. He ran out, detained the man, and called 112.
Police found that B had been deceived by perpetrators posing as bank officials and police and had attempted to hand over a single check for ₩100,000,000 (about $72,600).
Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect handed over, identified as C, and are focusing their efforts on uncovering any additional related offenses.
“Building a social safety net that fills crime blind spots through citizen reporting is essential,” Chuncheon Police said, urging the public to call 112 if they observe suspicious behavior—such as someone who remains anxious on the phone for an extended period or appears overly wary of their surroundings.
