[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] Hwang Seok-hee, the translator known for his work on films such as Deadpool and Spider-Man, has been reported to have criminal convictions related to sexual offenses.
On the 30th, Dispatch reported that Hwang was convicted of sex-related crimes in 2005 and 2014.
According to the report, in 2005 Hwang molested and assaulted women walking on the street in Chuncheon. He claimed he was intoxicated and in a diminished mental state, but the court sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.
The report says that in 2014, while teaching a video-translation class, Hwang was convicted on charges of quasi-rape against an intoxicated student in her 20s and of illicitly photographing her body. The court cited the family’s livelihood and his wife’s plea for leniency and sentenced him to two years in prison, suspended for four years.
Responding to the report, Hwang said he is reviewing the matter with his attorney and that he will consider seeking corrections or other responses if the report contains inaccuracies, unverified information, or statements that exceed the scope of legal judgment. His statement appears to challenge parts of the earlier report as not reflecting the actual facts.
Hwang married a dubbing translator in 2012 and has children. He gained recognition for translating numerous films, including Deadpool and Spider-Man, and has expanded his work to radio, YouTube, and public speaking, while maintaining communication through social media.
