The Gangwon branch of the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service identified 18 businesses that violated origin-labeling rules during a targeted enforcement sweep of online sales channels, including delivery apps.
On the 20th, the branch said inspectors monitored popular online platforms and delivery apps from the 3rd through the 13th, then focused enforcement on 634 businesses suspected of violations.
The most frequent origin-label violations involved napa cabbage kimchi (8 cases), tofu products (5), processed food items (4), and beef (1).
Investigators found a restaurant serving China-produced napa cabbage kimchi while listing the origin as domestic on a delivery app.
A tofu manufacturer used soybeans sourced from the U.S., China, and India but falsely labeled the products as domestic and sold them online.
The Gangwon branch has criminally charged 13 businesses for false origin labeling and imposed fines of 1.6 million KRW (about $1,200 USD) on five others.
An agency official said, “We will continue to strengthen origin-label oversight so consumers can buy agricultural products online with confidence.”
