[Sports Today reporter Im Si-ryeong] A former Seoul city council member who previously worked as a comedian is under police investigation on allegations that she borrowed money from local residents and district office employees and failed to repay it.
On the 18th, Yonhap News reported that Seoul’s Seodaemun Police recently booked the former council member, identified only as A, on fraud charges.
Police say they began investigating after receiving multiple complaints since last year alleging that A borrowed money from neighbors, district office staff and others and did not repay the loans. Authorities say the number of alleged victims runs into the dozens and that the total loss exceeds 1 billion KRW (approximately $750,000).
According to reports, A debuted in 1990 after being selected through a broadcaster’s open recruitment and worked as a comedian. She served on the 9th Seoul City Council from 2014 to 2018 and is also said to hold certifications as a laughter therapist and a recreation instructor.
