The Gyeonggi-do Pyeongtaek Education Support Office and Pyeongtaek City have joined forces to spearhead a community-centered reform in public education.
On January 21, the two entities signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the operation of Gyeonggi Shared Schools and strengthen local educational cooperation. This agreement aims to establish an education system where schools and the community share responsibility for student development.
The collaboration seeks to implement customized education tailored to each student’s unique characteristics and abilities. This will be achieved through the creation of a local education governance structure founded on mutual respect and trust.
Gyeonggi Shared Schools represent an innovative public education model that breaks down barriers between schools and communities. This approach incorporates diverse educational resources and stakeholders from across Gyeonggi Province.
At its core, the model focuses on providing elective and personalized learning support that aligns with students’ career aspirations, aptitudes, and learning levels.
Under this agreement, both institutions will jointly promote several initiatives. These include developing specialized local curricula, expanding student-centered programs, and ensuring sustainable learning opportunities. These efforts aim to strengthen the organic connection between schools and the broader community.
A key strategy of this partnership is to address diverse learning needs that schools alone cannot fully meet. By collaborating with the community, they aim to ensure growth opportunities for all students, regardless of their starting points in life.

Mayor Jeong Jang-seon emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Education is the most crucial investment in shaping our community’s future. We are committed to creating an educational ecosystem where students and the community grow together.”
Kim Yoon-ki, head of the Education Support Office, echoed this sentiment, saying, “This marks a pivotal moment where schools and the community jointly take responsibility for children’s growth. Through customized education, we aim to unlock new possibilities in public education.”
