Former announcer and broadcaster Choi Sun-kyu (67) shared a heart-wrenching story about nearly losing his daughter in a traffic accident.

On February 10, Choi appeared in a video on the YouTube channel ‘CGN’, where he revealed how he found his Christian faith following a traumatic incident 34 years ago involving his daughter.
He recounted, “It was Saturday, September 26, 1992, at 9:50 AM. I remember it vividly. I had just finished a live broadcast from 10 AM to noon when a junior announcer rushed to me in tears. She handed me a note that read, ‘Daughter in critical condition after traffic accident, Gangnam Seongsim Hospital emergency room.”
Choi continued, “They received the call at 9:50 AM, but it was already past noon. My daughter was only 3 years old, the first girl born into our family in 35 years. A moving truck had reversed in an alley, running over her with its back wheels. Then, thinking something was stuck, it rolled forward again. My daughter lost a lot of blood and was pronounced dead at the scene. My wife had crawled under the truck to pull her out and called me after rushing her to the emergency room.”
He described his frantic journey to the hospital, saying, “It should have taken just 10 minutes without traffic. But it was Saturday afternoon, and I had to get through the Yeongdeungpo rotary. Due to subway construction, traffic was at a standstill for an hour. As a father, I felt utterly helpless. The most terrifying moment of my life was being trapped at that rotary. I couldn’t bring myself to pass through it for over a decade after that, and the trauma persisted for years.”

Choi recalled his desperate prayers during the drive, “For an hour, I begged, ‘Please, just save my daughter this once.’ I cried my eyes out, pleading to trade places with her. I asked them to take me instead and save her.” He continued, “When I arrived at the hospital, she was covered with a white sheet. It was devastating. I held her alone for an hour, tears streaming down my face, repeating ‘Let’s go home’ and ‘I’m sorry.'”
He then described a miraculous turn of events, “After what seemed like more than an hour of holding her with no response, I suddenly felt warmth. She started to move slightly. I called for medical staff, shouting, ‘My daughter isn’t dead, please save her!’ but no one came to help. Shortly after, she began to cough. I put my finger in her mouth and removed a blood clot the size of a chestnut. That’s when she started breathing again.”
Choi went on, “That marked the beginning of two years of hospital stays. She was discharged at age five. There were lasting effects due to nerve damage in her left eye. She always had a frown, which led to teasing from other children. My wife and I made a difficult decision.” He added, “We sent our son and daughter to Vancouver, Canada, for early education. My wife joined them a year later. From then on, I lived as a ‘goose father’ for 20 years. I don’t think I could do it again if I had to.”
Choi’s daughter eventually recovered her health and pursued a degree in vocal music. Nine years ago, she became a flight attendant for WestJet and currently works in ground services. Recently, she got married, started her own family, and welcomed a son.
