Coupang emphasized that equating page views with actual information leaks would be inaccurate.
According to the company, a former employee of Chinese nationality accessed their internal system last year, performing about 140 million automated queries, which allowed access to data from approximately 33 million customer accounts.
However, Coupang clarified that only about 3,000 accounts actually stored data, which was subsequently deleted.
The unauthorized access was carried out using software personally developed by the employee. All devices used in the incident have been recovered and are now in the possession of the joint investigation team and the Personal Information Protection Commission.
Coupang stressed that highly sensitive information such as payment details, financial data, passwords, or government-issued identification was not accessed.
The accessed information was limited to names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, limited order history, and some public entrance codes.
Notably, while the investigation team reported about 50,000 queries related to public entrance codes, Coupang claims that only 2,609 accounts containing these codes were actually accessed.
The company reiterated that no secondary damage related to this data incident has been confirmed.
Independent security firms and multiple external agencies have monitored illegal trading channels, including the dark web, deep web, and Telegram, finding no evidence of information distribution or misuse.
The National Police Agency also reported in December that after analyzing about 22,000 cyber crime reports and over 116,000 serious crime cases, they found no confirmed instances of secondary damage linked to the Coupang data breach.
Coupang stated, “We remain committed to protecting customer data and maintaining transparent information disclosure.” They added that they will fully cooperate with government investigations and continue to strengthen their security systems to prevent further incidents.
The company also emphasized, “The public has the right to know the truth, and we hope all facts will be clearly revealed.”
