President Donald Trump’s first call to a foreign leader after the U.S.-China summit was to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, according to reports.
Jiji Press reported that U.S. Ambassador to Japan George Glass said this while speaking as a guest at the Liberal Democratic Party’s National Power Research Council inaugural meeting on the 21st, stressing that it reflects the trust underpinning the U.S.-Japan alliance.
Glass said China and Russia have labeled the Takaichi administration’s defense policies as “new militarism,” but dismissed that charge as baseless, arguing that those actors are attempting to weaken the alliance. He added that the United States and Japan are cooperating to preserve the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, promote denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and safeguard Japan’s territory, including the Senkaku Islands.
More than 200 LDP Diet members attended the meeting. The National Power Research Council counts 347 LDP members across both the House of Councillors and the House of Representatives. Prime Minister Takaichi did not attend the session.
