Muztaba Hameinei, Iran’s supreme leader, reportedly ordered that uranium must never be exported abroad.
Reuters quoted an Iranian government official on the 21st (local time) saying the supreme leader’s directive prohibits the export of highly enriched uranium. “We believe sending uranium overseas would make us more vulnerable to future attacks by the U.S. and Israel,” the official added.
In previous end-of-war negotiations, Iran proposed transferring half of its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% overseas. But talks stalled after the U.S. negotiating team pressed Iran to remove all of its uranium.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as of last year Iran held 440.9 kg of uranium enriched to 60%—an amount that, if further enriched, could produce roughly 10 nuclear weapons. The IAEA said more than 200 kg of that material is stored at the Isfahan nuclear facility.
Reuters said the supreme leader’s order has made negotiations more difficult and complicated efforts to end the war, characterizing the export of Iran’s uranium as a red line neither side appears willing to concede.
