Iran Retaliates by Attacking a U.S. Base in Kuwait

President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Iran even as talks about a potential ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran continue. U.S. forces shot down Iranian attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz and carried out airstrikes on military facilities in southern Iran. At the same time, both sides are pursuing ceasefire negotiations while managing limited clashes.

On the 27th (local time), the Wall Street Journal reported that at a White House cabinet meeting Trump said, “I don’t care about the midterms. Look at what happened last night.” He appeared to be referring to the victory of Ken Paxton, whom he backed, over incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn in the Texas GOP Senate primary. Observers had expected Washington to accelerate negotiations amid inflationary concerns—such as gasoline prices reaching a four‑year high—and pressure ahead of the midterms, but the WSJ said Trump rejected that assessment and stressed he is prepared for a prolonged effort.

Trump argued that Iran’s economy is collapsing and that this will force Tehran to make concessions. “Iran’s inflation rate has reached 250 percent, its currency has lost value, and the entire economic system has collapsed,” he said. “Iran is very serious and desperately wants an agreement. We’re not satisfied yet, but we will be eventually. We’ll either reach a deal or we will finish the job.” By framing it this way, he signaled that additional military options remain on the table if negotiations fail.

He also dismissed the proposal to move Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium to China or Russia as part of a peace agreement. “I don’t like that option,” Trump said. “Iran’s enriched uranium will be destroyed in the United States, in Iran, or at some other acceptable location.”

Escalating kinetic encounters have put the U.S.-Iran ceasefire talks on precarious footing. On the same day, U.S. forces intercepted and shot down Iranian drones and launched fresh strikes on military sites in and around the Strait of Hormuz, saying those locations posed threats to U.S. forces and commercial shipping.

Iran said it struck a U.S. airbase in retaliation for the U.S. strikes. It did not identify the base, but reports indicate it was likely a U.S. facility in Kuwait. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned, “If this happens again, we will respond more decisively,” adding that “the aggressor will bear responsibility for the consequences.”
