
President Lee Jae-myung said on May 24 that he was deeply saddened to learn a gas explosion at a coal mine in Shanxi Province, China, had caused significant loss of life.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) that day, he wrote, “I hope the Chinese government and relevant authorities will quickly bring this incident under control.”
He offered his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and to the people of China, and he wished a full recovery for all the injured.
According to the Associated Press and state-run Xinhua, a gas explosion struck the Tongzhou Group’s Liuxianwei coal mine in Qinyuan County, Changzhi City, Shanxi Province, on the afternoon of the previous day. At the time, 247 workers were underground; the death toll rose to 90.
