Korean activists Kim Ah-hyun and Kim Dong-hyun, who were captured by Israeli forces and later released, described how the military blocked outside rescue attempts and used violence during their detention. They said they plan to challenge provisions of South Korea’s passport law and will press for restrictions on South Korean companies doing business in Israel. The two spoke at a return press conference on May 22 in front of the Israeli Embassy in Seoul’s Jongno district, hosted by KEEP, the Korea chapter of the Voyage for Palestinian Liberation.Kim Ah-hyun said roughly 500 civilians from 45 countries set out on about 70 vessels. “To my knowledge, everyone has been released,” she said, adding that Italian and French lawmakers, members of the European Parliament and the sister of the Irish president were among those on the voyage, along with other politically influential figures. She emphasized that the group was moving peacefully when Israeli forces played music over radios to block calls for help and then moved in to suppress them. The forces boarded the boats, cut sails and damaged parts of the vessels, and generated waves so large some boats were rocked close to capsizing, she recalled. Detainees were then transferred to container-like holding cells, where, Kim said, they endured racist treatment, violence and torture.Kim Dong-hyun, who was detained with her, said he was bound and beaten repeatedly. He said he was forced to hold positions for long periods in conditions resembling torture, which ruptured muscle tissue; medical personnel advised that he requires long-term hospitalization. He added that although they returned safely, the government has not completed their legal entry procedures, so their health insurance coverage has not taken effect and they face difficulties obtaining medical care. They said they will continue to raise concerns about the government’s use of travel bans that restrict activists’ freedom. They also said they will urge the government to take stronger action to monitor and constrain companies doing business with Israel, including state-linked firms and companies that export weapons to Israel.#Israel #Activists #DetentionYonhap News TV — Inquiries and tips: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23; Mun Seung-wook (winnerwook@yna.co.kr)
