By Moon Hye-hyun, Herald Economy — The Blue House said it has not confirmed media reports that Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik will travel to Canada early next month as a presidential special envoy for strategic economic cooperation.
A Blue House official said the government is exploring ways to strengthen and expand energy and resource supply-chain cooperation with resource-rich Canada to prepare for a protracted crisis stemming from the war in the Middle East.
The official added that the Korea-Canada Energy and Resource Supply Chain Forum’s date and its list of participants have not been finalized.
News1 reported that Kang is likely to attend the Korea-Canada Resource Security Supply Chain Cooperation Forum in Canada early next month.
Analysts say the potential trip would form part of Seoul’s broader effort to secure a Canadian submarine procurement contract. Because Ottawa has tied the procurement to domestic investment commitments, Seoul appears to be leveraging resource and energy investments as bargaining chips.
