Samsung Electronics Union Strike Averted: What Does the Latest Agreement Mean for Workers?

The Democratic Party of Korea praised the government’s efforts and the decisions by labor and management after Samsung and its union reached a tentative agreement one day before a planned general strike, saying it values the government’s role in averting the strike and the parties’ resolve.

In a statement late on the 20th, Democratic Party spokesperson Park Hae-cheol said the strike that had been scheduled to start tomorrow has been put on hold, and that the union will conduct a membership vote on the tentative agreement from May 22 through May 27.

Park said that although union members still need to vote, he expects the agreement—negotiated and produced by union representatives—to be respected for its representativeness and significance. He described the outcome as a meaningful result that demonstrates how dialogue and mediation can produce solutions even amid intense confrontation and public concern over strikes.

He added that, particularly after the third Central Labor Commission’s post-adjustment failed and a strike loomed within hours, the minister personally stepping in to mediate and working tirelessly was an achievement worthy of public praise.

Park expressed gratitude for the government’s active mediation and welcomed the responsible stance of both sides for keeping dialogue alive during autonomous negotiations and choosing compromise and decisive action. Above all, he said, the agreement reaffirms that the challenge of protecting workers’ legitimate rights while ensuring companies’ sustainable growth can be resolved through compromise rather than conflict.

Based on this agreement, Park said the party will work to embed a culture of labor-management coexistence across industry and emphasized, We will move forward more firmly toward a Republic of Korea where labor is respected and companies can grow stably.
