Shinsegae Group said it has immediately dismissed CEO Son Jeong-hyun, holding him responsible for an inappropriate marketing event that took place on the 18th.
Chairman Chung Yong-jin personally ordered severe disciplinary measures today for those responsible and others involved in the controversy at Starbucks Korea.
Chairman Chung expressed particular outrage that the incident occurred on the memorial day honoring the noble spirit of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and instructed the company to impose the harshest possible penalties.
The decision is widely interpreted as Chairman Chung’s resolve to make an example of the matter and ensure that no similar incident recurs.
Shinsegae also said it will dismiss the executive who planned and oversaw the event with CEO Son and will initiate disciplinary procedures against all employees involved.
Shinsegae Group said, “Upon receiving the report, Chairman Chung immediately ordered a strict and thorough internal investigation and, considering the matter extremely serious, took the extraordinary step of dismissing the CEO.”
Moving forward, Shinsegae Group plans to overhaul its work processes to prevent similar incidents and to promote proper historical awareness throughout the organization.
