Governor Kim: GTX‑A at Samseong Station Will Be a Core Transit Artery for Gyeonggi Residents
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong‑yeon urged the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to launch a thorough investigation and implement measures to prevent a recurrence after shoddy construction was discovered at the GTX‑A Samseong Station.
On the 18th, he wrote on social media that the poor construction directly threatens the safety of not only Seoul residents but also 14.2 million people in Gyeonggi Province, saying it cannot be dismissed as mere negligence.
Governor Kim emphasized that the GTX‑A line, which runs from Paju Unjeong to Hwaseong Dongtan and passes through Samseong Station, will be a key transit route used daily by tens of thousands of Gyeonggi residents. He said the urgent priority is safety, not speed, and called for construction to be suspended entirely until safety is fully verified.
He also demanded a full inquiry into the causes and circumstances of the recently revealed defects. \”We must determine exactly why such a significant defect has only come to light now,\” Kim said, adding that there can be no compromise on safety.
He criticized officials who have dismissed the matter as a political attack, calling that response highly irresponsible for those with administrative responsibility.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s probe identified the problem area as the GTX platform section within the Samseong Station integrated transfer center, a project carried out by the Seoul city government. Inspectors found that, among 80 columns on the basement level‑5 platform, some columns that should have contained two rows of main reinforcement under the design were built with only one row, and 50 of the 80 columns failed to meet structural completion standards. The contractor blamed a misinterpretation of the design drawings, and the ministry said reports were delayed after the construction error was identified. It has launched audits of the Seoul city government and the Korea Rail Network Authority.
