When former Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo predicted the race’s top three finishers were a foregone conclusion and forecast a victory for Democratic Party candidate Ha Jung-woo in the Busan Buk-gu-gap by-election, independent candidate Han Dong-hoon attacked him sharply, calling him a deserter who defected to North Korea.

On the 18th, Han said, “The Democratic Party even called former Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo ‘dignified.’ Deserter Hong is effectively ‘defecting’ to the Democratic Party.”
He added, “They won’t accept him there either.” After Hong defended Democratic candidate Jeong Won-oh’s past alcohol-related violence incident, Han launched a counterattack, labeling him a deserter.
Park Jeong-hoon, a People Power Party lawmaker close to Han, also wrote on Facebook that “Former Mayor Hong is currying favor here and there to secure a post in a Lee Jae-myung administration,” and asked, “Just as Imperial Japan used pro-Japanese collaborators to persecute our people, is the ‘Lee Jae-myung Democratic Party’ now trying to annihilate conservatism by putting Hong up front?”
Earlier, Hong criticized turning the alcohol-related incident involving candidate Jeong — which surfaced during the Seoul mayoral race — into a campaign issue. He called it regrettable to make a vaguely defined incident from more than 30 years ago a campaign point and warned that while negative tactics can unsettle a race, the candidate destined to win will ultimately prevail.
