Creating a cultural and arts complex that combines exhibitions, education, and hands-on experiences
On April 28, Kim Dong-geun, the People Power Party’s candidate for Uijeongbu mayor, pledged to complete the Baek Young-soo Municipal Art Museum in the Howon-dong neighborhood.
Kim said that during his time as Uijeongbu mayor he laid the groundwork for the city’s first municipal art museum through a memorandum of understanding with the Baek Young-soo Art and Culture Foundation. He added that if re-elected, he will complete the Baek Young-soo Municipal Art Museum as a project tied to a redevelopment site and an adjacent cultural park.
Kim emphasized that the museum will feature a permanent display of Baek Young-soo’s work alongside curated exhibitions. He said it will also advance programs for children’s and youth art education, citizen participation initiatives, and exhibitions connecting local artists.
He argued that culture shapes a city’s standing and residents’ quality of life, and that a municipal museum sharing Baek Young-soo’s artistic legacy with the public would elevate Uijeongbu’s cultural foundations.
Kim has been a vigorous proponent of the museum, having made its creation a flagship project during the eighth local government term.
Kim also pointed to his record — attracting the Daewoong Group to Camp Jacks and securing the start of GTX-C construction — as proof of his ability to build a larger Uijeongbu, and he expressed strong commitment to redeveloping former U.S. military release sites.
Baek Young-soo was a leading figure of the New Realism movement in Korean modern art during the 1940s and 1950s. Working alongside artists such as Kim Whanki, Lee Jung-seop, and Jang Uk-jin, he left an indelible mark on Korea’s art history.
