[Herald Economy (Daegu)=Reporter Kim Byung-jin] The People Power Party’s Daegu city chapter has given an uncontested nomination to former Daegu deputy mayor for economic affairs Jeong Jang-su for the Jung-gu mayoral race. The decision has sparked an outcry after incumbent Jung-gu mayor Ryu Gyu-ha, who is seeking a third term, alleged the party violated its own nomination rules.
On April 24, Ryu issued an urgent statement calling the decision “clearly invalid” because it failed to meet the required quorum. He said he will seek a rehearing from the national party and file for a provisional injunction to suspend the nomination’s effect.
Ryu noted that the Daegu chapter’s nomination committee approved Jeong as the sole candidate with 5 votes out of nine committee members. He argued that, under city and provincial committee rules, recommending a single candidate requires the approval of two-thirds of all members—meaning at least six votes were necessary.
Earlier that morning, the People Power Party’s Daegu nomination committee held its 13th meeting and announced it had recommended former deputy mayor Jeong Jang-su as the sole candidate for the Jung-gu mayoral race.
